CBI-electric: african cables has been designing and manufacturing a comprehensive range of electrical power cables at their factory in Vereeniging, near Johannesburg, since 1935. Growth of the manufacturing facility has been consistent with the demand for the product locally while technological advancement has remained abreast of international trends. Today the company employs over 600 people and can justifiably claim to be a forerunner in the South African cable industry.
Products and Services
CBI-electric: african cables has the expertise to supply a product range that meets any user requirement, irrespective of load. Included in this manufactured range are:
- Low Voltage PVC/XLPE insulated cable;
- Medium Voltage XLPE;
- Medium Voltage paper-insulated cable,
- Aerial Bundled Conductor (ABC);
- Overhead Split Concentric;
- ACSR and
- High Voltage XLPE insulated cable.
Apart from product manufacture, CBI-electric: african cables also boasts a division specialising in the installation and maintenance of medium and high-voltage cable. This division of the company, known as Power Installations, is presently the sole southern African cable installation company accredited with ISO 9001 quality certification and have a 9EE CIDB rating.
Technology
CBI-electric: african cables places major emphasis on technological development and quality delivery and the company has a philosophy of being able to create a product that will suit any purpose, while at the same time maximising cost-efficiency in reticulation. A recent capital investment of R250m was undertaken to ensure that CBI-electric: african cables’ capacity matches expected SA economic growth and the demand in Africa. Specialist designs enhancing the safety aspects of cable used in mines have, in fact, been developed throughout the company’s history. The policy of technological innovation and quality delivery sets the company apart from its competitors and enables product design which meets individual user requirements in a wide variety of applications.

CBI-electric: african cables’ commitment to the maintenance of documented procedures and instructions, in accordance with the requirements of ISO 9001: 2000 culminated in the effective implementation of the documented procedures and instructions within the quality system. Further to the emphasis on quality, CBI- electric: african cables recognises its responsibility to the environment and the safe execution of business operations. This has led to the company acquiring both ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 accreditation.
The SABS has further confirmed that CBI-electric: african cables is the first company in the South African Cable Industry (Category SIC 26200) to obtain accreditation for ISO 9001: 2000, ISO 13001 and OHSAS 18001 simultaneously. In addition, the company is the third in this category to obtain ISO 14001 and the first to obtain the prestigious OHSAS 18001 accreditation.

This commitment is extended in its contribution to the industry by means of bursaries given to previously disadvantaged students studying engineering and finance. In addition to this CBI-electric: african cables offers artisans apprenticeships annually.
